Shawn Mendes‘ latest single, “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back”, doesn’t sound anything like anything else he’s ever put out — and that was the point.
“I wanted to make something that could play in the clubs,” he revealed in a new interview. “I wanted something people could dance to at parties. I realized I never had that [in my catalog].”
Shawn also opened up about the unexpected element of a guitalele in the track.
[It's] like a baby guitar with nylon strings that sounds like a ukelele,” he says of the instrument. “I went over to my buddy and was like, ‘I’m just going to play this [in the empty space after the chorus]‘. It ended up sounding so badass. It sounds like something you’d hear on an old Justin Timberlake record, right?”
You can definitely expect to hear Shawn playing it at all the festivals this summer too.
“I’m doing a couple festivals this summer so I know that’ll be a good one to play live,” he shared.
Shawn is pictured below, performing at his concert in Manchester, England on Friday (April 28).
If you didn’t know, Greyson is actually working on his degree right now.
“As of last year I decided to go to college to pursue a passion of mine in which I’ve always dreamed of obtaining a degree,” he wrote on Twitter last month. “This does not mean I’m done putting out music – I’ll always do so, for I can’t imagine a life where I’m not behind a piano w/ a pen & paper.”
The Dirty Dancing TV Special soundtrack will be out on May 19th!
